HOW TO GROW LAVENDER

HOW TO GROW LAVENDER

Lavender is a fragrant and versatile herb cherished for its calming scent, vibrant purple flowers, and wide range of uses—from aromatherapy to culinary delights. Whether you have a spacious garden or a small apartment balcony, lavender can be grown successfully with the right care and knowledge. In this guide, you'll learn how to grow lavender. We’ll also answer a common question: How long does it take for lavender to grow?

1. Growing Lavender from Seed

Starting lavender from seed requires patience, but it’s a rewarding process.

Steps:

  • Seed Selection: Choose high-quality seeds from varieties like English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), which is more cold-tolerant and fragrant.

  • Stratification: Lavender seeds germinate better after a cold period. Place seeds in a damp paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for 3–4 weeks.

  • Planting: Sow seeds on the surface of well-draining seed-starting mix. Do not bury them deeply—light aids germination.

  • Conditions: Keep the soil moist and maintain a temperature of around 70°F (21°C). Germination may take 2–4 weeks.

How long until harvest? Lavender started from seed typically takes up to a year before it's large enough to bloom, especially if grown indoors.

2. How to Grow Lavender Indoors

Growing lavender indoors is possible with the right setup, especially in colder climates.

Tips:

  • Light: Lavender needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. A south-facing window is ideal; otherwise, use a grow light.

  • Container: Use a pot with good drainage. Terra cotta is excellent as it allows the soil to dry out between waterings.

  • Soil: Use a sandy, alkaline, and well-draining mix. Cactus soil with a bit of lime works well.

  • Watering: Let the soil dry between waterings. Overwatering is a common issue when growing lavender indoors.

3. Growing Lavender in a Pot

Whether on a patio or balcony, lavender thrives in a pot if cared for properly.

Potting Tips:

  • Size: Choose a pot at least 12 inches wide with drainage holes.

  • Soil: Use well-draining soil mixed with sand or perlite.

  • Placement: Place your pot in a spot with full sun.

  • Watering & Feeding: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Fertilize sparingly, once or twice a season with a balanced fertilizer.

Bonus: Potted lavender can be moved indoors in colder months to protect it from frost.

4. Growing Lavender from Cuttings

Propagating lavender from cuttings is quicker than growing from seed and ensures the same plant traits.

How to:

  1. Cut a 4–6 inch healthy, non-flowering stem from a mature lavender plant.

  2. Strip the lower leaves, leaving just a few at the top.

  3. Dip the cut end in rooting hormone (optional but helps).

  4. Plant in a pot filled with moist, well-draining potting mix.

  5. Cover loosely with a plastic bag to maintain humidity and place in a bright, indirect light location.

Roots will develop in about 2–4 weeks, and once well-established, the plant can be transplanted outdoors or into a larger pot.

How Long Does It Take for Lavender to Grow?

  • From Seed: 10–14 days for germination, 9–12 months to mature and flower.

  • From Cuttings: 3–4 weeks to root, 2–3 months to grow substantially.

  • Potted or Indoor Lavender: Ready to harvest blooms in 6–12 months depending on growing conditions.

Final Thoughts

Lavender may need some attention early on, but it's a hardy plant once established. Whether you're starting from seed, growing indoors, keeping it in a pot, or propagating via cuttings, the key to success lies in sunlight, proper soil, and good drainage. With a little care and time, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful blooms and heavenly fragrance year after year.
